DESCRIPTION
Mercy is a single-player 3D narrative game that allows the player to explore the life of a struggling mother. By stepping into the shoes of this mother, you can explore her home to be able to grasp an understanding of the home's history.
Mercy's narrative is reflective of religious trauma, and how it can affect an entire family. This narrative explores the mind of a mother who lost her family due to religious beliefs. By exploring her home, the player learns about how this loss has affected the mother.
ENVIRONMENTAL LEVEL DESIGN GOALS
ROOM EXPLORATION
Depicting a middle-class home, the room layout and design was chosen to let the player explore the heaviest narrative points last. The farther rooms from the player's spawn point hold the heaviest narrative points, as player movement tends to be from the first door they see, to the other.
PROP PLACEMENT
Prop placement has narrative value within Mercy. Props that contain narrative value are placed in  locations away from non-interactable objects. This way, players have an easier understanding of which objects are interactable and hold narrative value.
MOVEABLE ENVIRONMENT
The rooms within the Mercy hold enough space to encourage exploration, while also making sense with the narrative. The space of the home is depicted to be the size of a middle-class American home despite holding the capacity of player exploration.
